Faeroe Islands: Sea Shepherd Undercover Operation Exposes Cetacean Mass Slaughter click to enlarge On July 19, 2010, a pod of 236 pilot whales was ruthlessly slaughtered in the town of Klaksvik in the Danish Faeroe Islands. Sea Shepherd was able to document the slaughter through the efforts of an undercover operative who had been living among the locals in order to capture footage of “the grind.” The grind is a cruel method of whaling that involves stranding pods of cetaceans in coves before severing their spinal chords with knives.

Whale Wars Nominated for Two Emmy Awards! Nominations for the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards were recently announced, and Animals Planet’s series Whale Wars received 2 nominations! Whale Wars , one of Animal Planet’s top rated series, follows the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as they wage a life-and-death battle to find and stop the illegal hunting of whales in the name of ‘research.’ Specifically, the episode Whale Wars–The Stuff of Nightmares, in which a whale is harpooned and is shown taking 23 agonizing minutes to drown, is competing against LIFE and The National Parks for the titles of Outstanding Cinematography For Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Picture Editing For Nonfiction Programming. The Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on Sunday August 29 at 8 p.m.

With the addition of the Ady Gil to the Sea Shepard fleet, Paul Watson is hoping to have a fast boat that harasses the harpoon ships while the Steve Irwin goes after the factory ships!
Thanks to to a generous donation from game show host Bob Barker, Captain Watson has been able to purchase another ship. The Sea Shepherd have been secretly repairing the old ship in hopes of adding it to it’s arsenal. The Bob Barker has something the Steve Irwin does not, a reinforced hull that will be able to break it’s way through the ice.
Whale Wars Season 3 Premiers Friday, June 4 th The third season of Animal Planet’s hit television series Whale Wars launches on Friday, June 4 th at 9 PM in the U.S. The new season of Whale Wars follows Sea Shepherd’s 6 th Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign, named Operation Waltzing Matilda in honor of Australia’s unofficial national anthem, on the three-month journey to the South Ocean Whale Sanctuary to stop illegal whaling.
